Punta Tombo Penguin Colony, Argentina – 24 February 2015

Hi there,

Punto Tombo was the fifth stop in my two week trip around Argentina, and no less unique than the other places I visited.

We had been staying in Puerto Piramides in the days prior with a 5 hour drive away is to far to do Punta Tombo in a day trip, and I had read that it was best to visit the colony in the morning.   So rather than move from Valdes half way to Puerto Madryn, we decided to stay in a ranch about 20km from Punta Tombo.  This proved to be a great shout, we were at the colony the next morning at 8am for when it opened and were first in.   We had a good hour wandering around the place on our own enjoying watching the little fellas go about their business, then around 10/10.30 the coach tour crews started to arrive and the places was heaving with tourists.   So my advice is if you’re travelling independently, do what we did and get there early.   We were still there at about midday after the tourist had left, and notice that the penguins were much quieter than in the morning, with many in their burrows.  So you’ll likely see more going on first thing.

We were staying in a ranch called Estancia La Antonieta, who’s owner Guido operates excursions for his guests to an unknown elephant seal colony on a length of coastline which can only be accessed by 4×4 over his land.   Read more about that in the post below, along with the other spots we visited in our two week jaunt:

Iguazu Falls

Perito Moreno glacier

Peninsula Valdes

Punta Tombo elephant seal colony
